Last Wednesday, I received an invitation to the media preview of “Taste the World,” a food event bringing global cuisine together under one Vancouver roof. The event will feature 6 local restaurants stepping into the culinary shoes of 6 flavor meccas from around the world. This fun concept is expanded even more with a food passport you can get stamped at each station or if you’re a wine person, you can get a food and wine passport that gets you 6 flights of complementary wine.
The six participating restaurants are:
Benton Brother’s Fine Cheese– France
Calabash Bistro– Caribbean
Charm Modern Thai– Thailand
Dona Cata– Mexico
Fresh Local Wild– New York “street food”
The preview was held at Calabash Bistro, known for producing “dynamic and flavorful Caribbean food in a healthy and creative atmosphere.” It was my first time at Calabash and as soon as I entered, I got the sense that I was going to be transported to another world. Perhaps if I’d been coming for dinner I would have gotten a proper experience, but for now that dream would remain tucked into my pocket because there was business to take care of. Food-media-previewing type business.
I felt privileged to be mingling with the VIPs in the room, holding my rum punch like I too was part of this amazing crowd of media folks (one day I will be!). For now, let’s just say I was there as “part of the band,” which I think sounds pretty cool too.
The preview featured a mesmerizing performance by Gio Escueta, a local singer-songwriter. I was excited to learn that Gio would be performing at “Taste the World,” along with the fabulous DJ Jaala Wanless and Dustin Timms, who will be sure to amaze with his on-site painting exhibition.
And what of the food? Calabash prepared some delicious samples for us that left me internally demanding that “Taste the World” hurry up and get its butt over here ASAP. Because if one restaurant was THIS GOOD, imagine how gastronomically spectacular five more will be? Be still my gurgling stomach, the food will be here soon…
